Dexion Evicus is an Imperial Moth Priest who is traveling across Skyrim in search of an Elder Scroll to add to his order’s collection.

Interactions[]

Prophet[]

Dexion is held in a magical cage inside Forebears’ Holdout. The Dragonborn must free Dexion by using a Weystone Focus to lower the magical barrier.

Dawnguard questline[]

Dexion, who has been enthralled by Malkus, immediately attacks the Dragonborn and Serana. After he is defeated, he «comes to his senses» and travels to Fort Dawnguard where he will read the Elder Scroll.

Vampire questline[]

Dexion must be made into a thrall by using the Vampire’s Seduction power and then feeding on him. After the quest is completed, he will travel to Castle Volkihar where he will read the Elder Scroll, from now on Dexion will reside in the castle and replace the original watchman, as the first watchman disappears during the storyline.

Seeking Disclosure and Scroll Scouting[]

Dexion asks the Dragonborn to retrieve two additional Elder Scrolls so that he can read the entire prophecy. Once they are retrieved, it is found that Dexion has gone blind due to his haste to read the first scroll. He sends the Dragonborn to Ancestor Glade to perform the Ritual of the Ancestor Moth to provide further answers to the prophecy.

Kindred Judgment[]

Upon completion of the main quest-line for Dawnguard, if the Dragonborn joined the Dawnguard, he offers to take the Elder Scrolls (Sun) and (Blood) so that he may take them back to Cyrodiil and archive them in the White-Gold Tower. Alternatively, he can be persuaded to buy them for 6,000 Gold.

If the Dragonborn joined Harkon’s court, he will remain in Castle Volkihar as a servant to the Dragonborn. He can be asked two questions; however, he will not offer to purchase the Elder Scrolls from them.

Combat[]

During combat, he typically uses fire-based spells, such as Fireball and Flames, in conjunction with melee attacks from his sword. He will also use restoration magic to heal himself.

Equipment[]

  • He carries a unique weapon called the Akaviri Sword. This sword is only obtainable through use of the Misdirection perk.
  • After becoming blind, Dexion becomes the only character to wear a blindfold in the game.
  • He wears a unique white-colored robe called Moth Priest Robes and a unique pair of shoes named Moth Priest Sandals.

Dialogue[]

Show: Prophet (Dawnguard)
Inside Forebears’ Holdout:

«I serve my master’s will. But my master is dead, and his enemies will pay!»

After besting Dexion:

«Wait, stop! I yield! That… that wasn’t me you were fighting. I could see through my eyes, but I could not control my actions. Thank you for breaking that foul vampire’s hold over me.»
«Thank the divines for you!»

Are you alright? «I’m quite alright, thanks to you. Dexion Evicus is my name. I’m a Moth Priest of the White Gold Tower. These vampires claimed they had some purpose in store for me, but they wouldn’t say what. Probably hoping to ransom me, the fools.»

I know why they needed you, because we need you for the same purpose. «You do? Alright then, enough mysteries.»

I’ll explain later. Right now, we need your help and time is short. «Well, you saved me from those vampires. I suppose the least that I can do is hear you out.»
We’re called the Dawnguard, and we need you to read an Elder Scroll. «You have an Elder Scroll? Remarkable! If my knowledge of history serves me, I recall that the Dawnguard was an ancient order of vampire hunters. I will be happy to assist you with your Elder Scroll. Just tell me where I need to go.»

You can find us at Fort Dawnguard, near Stendarr’s Beacon. «Very well. I’ll hurry on my way there before more of those vampires turn up.»
What do Moth Priests do, exactly? «It is our sacred duty to study the Elder Scrolls. We read these ancient scrolls of prophecy in order to divine the future, and we use that knowledge to aid the Emperor. Sometimes we venture out into the world in search of more scrolls for our library at the White-Gold Tower. That is the very purpose that first brought me to Skyrim.»

The White-Gold Tower? «It is the great spire at the heart of the Imperial City, among the tallest towers in all of Tamriel. The lower floors are home to the Imperial Council, and the Order of Moth Priests occupies the middle floors. The tower suffered damage in the recent war with the Aldmeri Dominion, and is not what it once was. I hope one day to see it restored to its former glory.»
What do you know about the Elder Scrolls? «Not as much as I would like. Even after spending decades of my life in study of the Elder Scrolls, they remain a great mystery to me. It’s true for most of my brothers in the order as well. We don’t really know where the scrolls came from or who wrote them. What we do know is that some are born with the special gift to read the Elder Scrolls. These chosen few can divine events of the past and future within the scrolls, though in time, it drives us to blindness. I’m afraid there’s not much more to tell. Even today, the Elder Scrolls remain a great enigma.»

If approached again:

«You’ve arrived just in time. I think those vampires were getting hungry.»
«This is all more excitement than I’m used to.»
«I owe you a debt for the timely rescue.»
«If I’d known Skyrim was so dangerous, I’d have brought more guards.»
«Ambushed by vampires… I certainly wasn’t expecting that.»

After arriving at Fort Dawnguard:

«My trip to Skyrim has become quite the adventure!»

After talking with Isran:

«Ah, hello there!»
«What can I do for you?»

Glad you made it here safely, Dexion. «Ah, my rescuer! It’s good to see you again.»

Have my companions made you feel welcome? «It’s not exactly the hospitality I’m used to, but your man Isran has seen to my needs well enough. And might I add, this is a remarkable fortress. I have colleagues back home that would love to study this place in detail.»

Are you prepared to read the Elder Scroll? «Oh, most certainly! Let’s find out what secrets the scroll can tell.»

After the scroll reading:

Do you have any insights about your Elder Scroll reading? «I wish I could say that I did, but without the other two Scrolls, the picture will remain incomplete. I admit, I feel a bit frustrated that I can’t be more helpful. Still, our enemy is likely just as much in the dark as we are, and that’s something. Now it’s a race to claim the remaining Scrolls and discover what part Auriel’s Bow has to play in this prophecy.»

I need the Elder Scroll that speaks of dragons. «I wish I could help. The scrolls have changed hands so many times, it’s impossible to keep track. Normally, I’d send you to the Imperial City in Cyrodiil to seek answers at the Imperial Library, but that avenue no longer exists.»

Why is that? «The Elder Scrolls vanished from the Imperial City around 175 of this era and have been scattered across Tamriel by forces unknown. If you want to find the remaining scroll, you’ll have to consult with someone versed in magical knowledge. Perhaps at the College of Winterhold?»
Show: Prophet (Vampire)
Inside Forebears’ Holdout:

«By the divines! It’s as if my eyes have been opened! I am blinded by the light of your majesty. I… I must obey you. What would you have of me, master?»

I command you to travel to Castle Volkihar. «Certainly. Where can I find this castle?»

Off the northern coast of Skyrim, due west of Solitude. «I’ll set out at once, then.»

If approached again:

«What is your command?»

What do Moth Priests do, exactly? «It is our sacred duty to study the Elder Scrolls. We read these ancient scrolls of prophecy in order to divine the future, and we use that knowledge to aid the Emperor. Sometimes we venture out into the world in search of more scrolls for our library at the White-Gold Tower. That is the very purpose that first brought me to Skyrim.»

Even today, the Elder Scrolls remain a great enigma.»

Upon arrival at Castle Volkihar:

«Master, I have done as you asked and traveled here.»

I have a new task for you, thrall. «Of course. What is it that you need me to do?»

You must read an Elder Scroll. «Ah, yes, the Elder Scroll! I admit, I’m looking forward to this.»

Then you may begin your reading. «Of course, master.»
Show: Seeking Disclosure
If the Dragonborn is part of Dawnguard:

«I trust your journey was successful?»

I’ve brought the Elder Scrolls. «I’m sorry, my friend. I can no longer be of use in this matter.»

Why? What’s happened? «It’s my fault. In my haste to read the first scroll, I neglected the careful preparation required. I thought I’d be able to allay the after effects, but I was wrong. Now I’m paying for it.»

That covering on your eyes. Are you- «Blind? Yes. I’m afraid so.»

Can anything be done to help you? «No. It’ll have to run its course, and there’s always the chance I may never recover.»

Then we’re finished. «No, there’s another way. The question is, how much are you willing to risk to find Auriel’s Bow?»

What do I need to do? «I can’t guarantee you’d be free from harm. Becoming blind could be the least of your worries.»

Don’t worry about that. Just tell me. «Scattered across Tamriel are secluded locations known only as Ancestor Glades. There’s one in Skyrim, in the Pine Forest. Performing the Ritual of the Ancestor Moth within the glade should provide the answers you seek.»

Explain this «ritual.» «It involves carefully removing the bark from a Canticle Tree which will in turn attract Ancestor Moths to you. Once enough of the moths are following, they’ll provide you with the second sight needed to decipher the scrolls.»

Carefully gather the bark? How? «In keeping with tradition, you must use a specific tool in the Ancestor Glade, an implement known as a Draw Knife. Every Moth Priest is taught this ritual, but few ever get the chance to perform it… you should consider yourself fortunate if it works for you.»

Do I need to read the scrolls in any particular order? «From what I saw in the vision, the Elder Scroll which foreshadows the defiance of the gods with the blood of mortals is the key to the prophecy.»

How’s a moth related to the Elder Scrolls? «Well, as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, it’s no mere coincidence that we’re named «Moth Priests.» The voice of the Ancestor Moth has always been an integral part of reading the Elder Scrolls.»

Moths barely make a sound, let alone speak. «Oh, the moths don’t literally read the scrolls… but they maintain a connection to ancient magic that allows the Moth Priests to decipher them. If you listen closely when you find the glade, you should be able to hear their song… a soft, harmonious trilling. It’s through this ancestral chorus that the moths tap into a form of primal augur and become a conduit of deciphering the scrolls.»

How does that help the Moth Priest? «By having the Ancestor Moth close to the Moth Priest, they can utilize the conduit and share the moth’s augury. Only the most resilient of priests can do it this way… it takes years of practice to interpret the harmony.»

Then how do I even stand a chance? «You’ve come this far, and you’ve found several Elder Scrolls. Whether you believe it or not, the scrolls have a mind of their own. If they didn’t want you to find them, they wouldn’t allow it. Because of this, I strongly believe you were meant to hear the ancestral chorus. Only one way to find out.»
Is it normal for Moth Priests to go blind? «Sadly, yes. It’s the inevitable fate we agree to pursue when reading the Elder Scrolls. It generally doesn’t occur until a Moth Priest is in his latter years, but in my case I simply wasn’t preparing myself properly.»
What went wrong? «Deciphering one of the Elder Scrolls is nothing like reading a simple book. There’s quite a bit of ritual and concentration required. It can take months or even years to complete a single scroll and even then, months to recover.»

«Good luck. I hope you find the answers you seek.»

If the Dragonborn is a vampire of the Volkihar Clan:

«Yes, how may I serve you, milord?»

I’ve brought the Elder Scrolls. «I’m afraid I won’t be able to help you with the scrolls any longer, milord (or «milady»). Please, don’t be angry with me.»

What are you talking about? «I’m afraid in my haste to read the first scroll, I neglected the time I needed to prepare. The failure is purely mine to bear. As you can see from my bandages, it’s not that I’m unwilling, it’s that I’m physically unable.»

You’re blind! «Oh please, milord (or «milady»). Please… forgive me!»

I don’t suppose there’s a cure. «If only such a miracle existed, I’d overcome the impossible in order to secure it if it meant pleasing you.»

Then we have no further need of you. «Although I would gladly die by your hand, perhaps I could offer an alternative way to read the scrolls?»

Go on. «Oh thank you, milord (or «milady»). Thank you!»

Just get to it!

«Fortune smiles upon you, milord.»

The Elder Scrolls have served me well, Dexion. «Of course they did. I never doubted for a moment. If I may ask, what will you do with them now?»

They’re bound to bring me fortune and glory. «Ah, yes. Hmm. I’m afraid they don’t quite work that way. Might I offer an alternative?»
I hadn’t really thought about it. «No? Well, I’ve given it a bit of thought.»
They’re indestructible, so they’d make good armor. «Oh dear. No, I’m afraid that’s not going to work at all. I have an alternative for you, if you’d be interested.»
Did you have something in mind? «I did, in fact. Quite perceptive of you.»

«I’d very much like to have those scrolls. Someday I may be able to return them to their rightful place in the Imperial City. How would you feel about turning them over to me?»

6000 gold, and they’re yours. «Oh my, that’s… Well, that’s not exactly what I had in mind. Still, if it means their safe-keeping, I suppose it is worth it.»
I’d be happy for you to have them. Here. «Thank you! You’re too kind.»

«This has certainly been quite the adventure, hasn’t it?»
I’m going to hold on to them for now. «Ah, yes. I see. Well, if you do change your mind, please let me know.»

Do you still want the Elder Scrolls? «Yes, certainly. Are you willing to let me have them?»

Bugs[]

This section contains bugs related to Dexion Evicus. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

  1. Please reload an old save to confirm if the bug is still happening.
  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  /  PS5  ,  XS  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.
  3. Be descriptive when listing the bug and fixes, but avoid having conversations in the description and/or using first-person anecdotes: such discussions belong on the appropriate forum board.
  •  PC   360   PS3   He may become hostile and refuse dialogue, thus halting the progress in the quest.
    • Fix: Do not kill or attack the imperial corpse called «Vampire Corpse» in any way (strike with a sword, conjure, use destruction magic, etc.), even if the corpse is already dead. If raised by a vampire, then kill the vampire instead. When Dexion is released from the Magical Barrier, wait until the quest gives the objective to «Defeat the enthralled Dexion.»
    • Fix: If this is another play-through, and one is traveling to the cave, have the quest active. After heading south from Dragon’s Bridge, one will come upon a broken carriage with two corpses. One corpse is an Imperial Soldier and the other is a Vampire corpse. There is a note on the Vampire corpse. Take the note and read it.
    • Fix: Use the Vampire’s Seduction power on him to temporary revoke his hostile status.
    • Fix: Use a Calm spell or scroll to make him non hostile. If an Imperial, use the Voice of the Emperor to calm him for a short period of time. After it wears off, step outside and wait 24 hours and do it again. The spell or effect has to be powerful enough to work on the Dragonborn, as Dexion spawns at the same level.
    •  PC   Solution through normal game-play: If one is outside the cave, wait until five hours elapse. If the game was saved while in the cave, go outside and wait for several hours (suggested 5+) and reenter. The «Defeat the enthralled Moth Priest» stage script should run normally after freeing the priest.
    • Fix: If the option «defeat the enthralled Moth Priest» does not show, load older save (before the Dragonborn used Weystone Focus). Kill Malkus and others, then pick Weystone Focus (but do not use it). Use the console command tcl and speak with the Moth Priest. Wait 1 hour; he will disappear from the magical barrier. Travel to Fort Dawnguard and then use the command setstage DLC1VQ03Hunter 100..
    •  PC   Solution through console: Instead of using the Weystone Focus on the altar to deactivate the barrier (which is the cause of him going hostile), use the console to deactivate the barrier. This way, Dexion will not become hostile. The quest marker for deactivating the barrier will still remain, but it will disappear once the quest is finished.
    •  PC   Solution through console: using the ID 02007b88 (this can be obtained from clicking on him while console is open or typing prid to manually enter) Summon him outside the keep via console command moveto player, then use the setav aggression 0 console command on him as he walks back inside. This will reset his hostility meter.
  •  PC   360   PS3   He can occasionally be seen in the center of the Dawnguard fortress doing the animation for reading an Elder Scroll after the quest «Seeking Disclosure» has been completed, despite being blind and not actually having an Elder Scroll in his hands.
    • Fix: Talking to him will cause him to quit the animation.
  •  PC   PS4   After the Dawnguard main quest is completed, the Dragonborn should have the ability to sell all three of the Elder Scrolls to Dexion. However, the speech option may not appear. Urag gro-Shub will still purchase them, though. Gold from selling the scrolls may appear in the inventory even if the scrolls are not removed.
    • In case they cannot be sold, using the console command completequest dlc1vqelderquestitemhandler will allow all three scrolls to be dropped.
  • At the end of «Prophet,» he may not progress dialogue after reading the Elder Scroll. If reloading does not help, enter /setstage DLC1VQ03Hunter 200 into the console to complete the quest.
  • If Dexion continues to be hostile, enter prid xx007B88 to select him. Then, use setav aggression 0 to remove his hostility.
  • If Dexion continues to be hostile, use the console to disable the hostile Dexion. Afterwards, type in help Dexion 4 to look up his ID and use the console command placeatme ####. He will spawn in the cell he was disabled from. If more than one appears, click on the extra Dexion and type in disable.
  • It is possible to force him to continue the questline by using a fully powered Bend Will shout and interacting with him the second he sheathes his sword. He will continue to attack after the Dragonborn is done interacting with him, however. If he is down on one knee, use restorative magic to recover his health, then perform the Bend Will shout again.

Appearances[]

  • The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard

These chosen few can divine events of the past and future within the scrolls, though in time, it drives us to blindness. I’m afraid there’s not much more to tell. Even today, the Elder Scrolls remain a great enigma.»

«Scattered across Tamriel are secluded locations known only as Ancestor Glades. There’s one in Skyrim, in the Pine Forest. Performing the Ritual of the Ancestor Moth within the glade should provide the answers you seek.»
