Hi all,

I have a «New» Mac Pro (6,1) for work, and it has started locking randomly; the machine freezes completely (clock stops, mouse & keyboard unresponsive, force-quit commands don’t work, etc.) and does so regardless of applications that may be running (it will lock even when only the Finder is running).

The machine appears to realize it is locked though, because after 30 seconds or a minute or so it automatically reboots itself. After one of these instances the machine offered me an error report, and I coped the MCA Error Report.

I’m hoping some of you folks might be able to read it for me and tell me what it means. It **appears** to me to be indicating a hardware problem (and that seems reasonable given the machine’s behavior).

Anyway, here goes. Any help deciphering what this means would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there!

I recently tried installing Windows on my 2017 MBP Touch Bar, but getting a reboot in the process with this corresponding error code.

Anyone in here knows what this means? I have been getting different sorts of problems from the computer lately, but this is the first time I’m actually getting a error readout.

If you search for «*** MCA Error Report ***
CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6267U CPU @ 2.90GHz, CPUID: 0x406E3)
CATERR detected! No MCA data found.» you’ll see that this is a long standing problem.

Most people that have reported this for the past few years have had attached high-res (4K/5K) and/or USB-C devices.

I can reproduce this 100% of the time on a MacBook Pro 2016 (13″ 4x Thunderbolt) even on the latest Catalina 10.15.7. I’ve actually had the issue since late 10.14.

The laptop was rock solid for 4 years — then I bought a Dell U3419W ultra-wide (USB-C) monitor. If the laptop isn’t connected to the monitor — no problems.

If it’s attached to the monitor, and I let it go to sleep, I’ll get the machine-check within 30-45 minutes of it going into sleep.

I have reproduced this over 20 times in testing in the last week alone. 100% reproducible — Dell USB-C monitor + sleep -> Machine check. Identical setup, if I never let it sleep, absolutely no problems. I can work for at least 12 hours (or sometimes more) and as long as it doesn’t go to sleep — no problem. In fact, I once kept it from going to sleep for 14 hours and still no problems. I can let the laptop sleep without the monitor, no problems.

I’ve sent at least 30 or 40 problem reports to Apple.

Does anyone else have this level of reproducibility? Or have the same monitor and no problems?

Thanks for the pointer — I hadn’t really thought of monitors having firmware these days.

Strangely enough the latest firmware offered on the Dell web site is M3B106 from 2019, yet my monitor purchased in June 2020 has M3B107.

I am thinking that I will try an NVRAM reset. We’ll see. Supposedly that’s one of the cures for «weird USB problems», too.

Wife has similar problem on her 16″ MBP 2019. Apple support suggests to start up in Safe mode (hold SHIFT while booting). It will be dog slow.

I have heard a rumblings about it being related to the discreet GPU/external monitor/sleep, but I can’t confirm, because it’s crashed on her without being connected to anything, and not necessarily asleep.

bolded mine, fyi

If I am not mistaken, the 13″ 4 port mentioned by Tep doesn’t have a discrete GPU?

Personally, I get occasional crashes on my 2016 15″ MacBook Pro, but since it’s only once every 6 months or so, I can live with it and haven’t checked further (this is with one or two of the first version LG 5K connected). I’ll search for MCA error report then.

The main issue I have with the 15″ is that it gets really hot above the keyboard / Touch Bar area when running an external display, but from what I can gather subsequent models of 15″ and 16″ keep having this, related to the discrete GPU. We’ll see when the Apple Silicon one is released, but it should run cooler.

My wife has this exact MBP. It doesn’t usually get hooked to external monitors, but maybe tomorrow I can tryi hooking it up to either my LG Ultrafine 5K or my HP z27q (both 5K). Zero problems driving either one with my 16”.

Logic Board won’t boot sometimes. When it does and I get it into OS, this is what I get.

Any clues? This Logic Board is not liquid damaged, just decided to die on its own…. I did test this Board in another known perfect working shell and same results. A new Logic Board installed in the problematic MacBook and all the issues go away so I know it’s 100% the Logic Board.

Did you also try another SSD?
Try to start USB macOS too.

Thomas

  • #3

I did try another SSD, that’s not it.

When it wants to turn on it will boot to an external USB drive with Mac OS loaded, it will also boot to a known good internal SSD, it will also boot to the original SSD, when I test the original SSD in another perfect Mac of the same model the SSD tests OK. However booting to any internal SSD or external HDD when the system gets past the login and you start doing normal stuff like surfing the web or looking at youtube the system won’t stay stable, it shuts off and restarts and then I get the kernel panic as shown above on the next successful boot. It will do this over and over and sometimes when the MacBook turns on the fan spins for 10 seconds then stops, nothing on display, just black screen & caps lock has no response.

Looks like CPU issue.
Howver, can be RAM, or god knows what else blocking the CPU.
Dukefawks said 00840/875 are garbage boards…

Thomas

  • #5

I’d like to repair it, I have all the tools needed to professionally repace the CPU & RAM.

What next step should I take on this?

Thomas

  • #6

Also, thanks for the opinion of Dukefawks, I agree however in my opinion all Apple Logic Boards are garbage.

  • #7

Are you ready to replace CPU and/or RAM chips in this board???
Good luck then.

Thomas

  • #8

I’m ready, thanks for the luck. Which should I do first? CPU or RAM? Which do you «think» it is?

  • #9

Error message points to CPU register…
