Xbox original error 16

xbox error 16 - Original Microsoft Xbox with error 16. Error 16 means "clock can not be set". This is often caused by corrupted or missing.

xbox error 16

Here we can see “Xbox error 16

It comes right down to this. Error 16 has to do with not finding the menu setting with which you’ll set the clock of the HDD. This happens to tons of individuals that erase their HDD (original/upgraded) or MS dashboard files, and then they do not immediately install the HDD but leave the Xbox without power longer than 5 hours.

It’s all about the HDD can’t find the menu with which it can set the clock. This is often mostly because the Xbox HDD is empty (you removed the dashboard or fux0red it via FTP). the matter arises when Xbox searches for a menu to line clock with, can’t find it, and voila: error 16. Well, read on, please!

So you’ve got an error 16, huh? Don’t be concerned “nothing” is broken!

You have an Xbox HDD that’s locked. And normally, you’ll boot in original and modded mode. Retail or upgraded doesn’t matter. You begin fooling around with Xbox dash. Be etc., using FTP programs. While doing this, you “accidentally” remove your MS dashboard and also your alternate dashboard (Evox, etc.), so there’s no dash anymore on the Xbox HDD.

You end the FTP session, and then you shut off your Xbox. Normally, once you begin again, it gives you an error of 13/14 ( no dashboard found). No worries, with a slayer Evox cd (and a hard mod), all is ok. BUT this is often only WITHIN 3 hours approximately.

This is because the internal clock of the Xbox will only be kept alive by the capacitors for less than 3 or 4 hours. So once you leave your Xbox unplugged from electricity for over 5 hours after you’ve got played with the .xbe’s AND you’ve got removed your (ms and Evo-x) dash from your Xbox, then you’re fux0red. Why does one ask?

Why can’t I boot from disc?

It’s as follows Xbox starts booting==> (almost 1st thing an Xbox does is) searches for internal clock==> doesn’t find internal clock because there hasn’t been any electricity on the Xbox for five hours. Hence, a battery that kept the clock alive is empty, and the clock is gone==> searches for the right dashboard menu to line clock with ==> doesn’t find my dashboard or Evo-x dashboard menu because you’ve got removed it from the HDD for whatever reasons you had==> Xbox gives error 16: cannot set the clock.

So what does one do about it? Two options!

1. There are some biases around that allow the chip else past the clock setting. (search!). So how does one get that bio on your chip because you can’t boot to a flash program or something? Well, you would like to possess an external flasher.

It seems the m8 bios will look out for you of booting past the clock setting. Or use the newest Xecutor bios.

  1. this is often the less difficult and newbie-friendly strategy
  • Get a lover with a modded Xbox.
  • Unlock his HDD with EEPROM management from a slayer Evo-x cd.
  • Than, place his HDD in your Xbox.
  • Boot together with your chip on.
  • Now, the Xbox DOES find a dashboard once you boot in original mode, and you’ll set the time within my dashboard clock settings.
  • Shut off Xbox and take away your friends HDD
  • PLace his HDD back in his Xbox and lock it again
  • Install your HDD
  • (clock has been set) So boot up with slayer cd.
  • Install normally whatever you want to install
  • lock HDD

  1. Original Xbox Error 16 Help.

Hello, I recently went on a visit, and once I came back, my sister had an ingenious Xbox expecting me as she knows I collect and somehow did not have one in my collection. So I buy the cables needed online, and once I connect the Xbox, it says I even have error 16; I did some research which could suggest that the previous owner modded it, but there are no signs that the Xbox was opened as all of the stickers on rock bottom are in near perfect condition. Any help? I’d adore using the console, but all the guides I find online are for consoles that were modded. I’m not against opening the system myself, but I would like some help to know what I’m doing. Thank you.

  1. Solved Xbox Error 16

I have tried everything the sole option I even have left maybe a modchip, but is there another way to fix this? INFO: I attempted upgrading the disk drive, which didn’t work with a chimp, so I changed to cloning the disk drive, but that must’ve corrupted or deleted the files needed to run

  1. Error 16 lost Xbox dash

I had a softmodded Xbox with an unleash dash installed, but I lost my original Xbox dash. So! n trying to urge it back, I erased the unleash dash, and now my Xbox displays error 16.

My Xbox won’t boot anything now!

  1. Error 16

I’ve got an Xbox v1.1 that’s giving me error 16. I even have little history thereon besides that it had been softmodded and worked before the clock cap was removed.

I’ve used xboxhdm to rebuild the C and, therefore, the whole hard drive with several stocks and modded file sets. Then, finally, I used the error 12 hot-swap method and was ready to view the dashboard files on the drive.

I’ve even installed an Aladdin xt2 chip that also showed error 16

I’ve even built a new unlocked drive on another system. Did power cycle/unplugged/waited for an inbuilt console with no issues and then installed into chipped Xbox, leading to error 16?

Swapping in another locked hard drive showed error 06 as predicted.

Anyone has any idea what I might be doing wrong or anything to try?

So some one was nice enough to throw out a like new original Xbox, I plugged in the av cables and power cord (don’t have a power adapter but it still powers on with just the cord) and it turns on runs great from what I can tell minus the Error 16 message I get after the Xbox boot up intro. So how does one fix this? I can clearly see some one was in the unit before when I found it, I’m guessing they were trying to mod it and failed or something. From what I’ve read about this issue it has to do with the battery for the clock or something to that effect, but I could be wrong. Any help would be awesome as always :)

P.S wasn’t sure if this was the right spot to place this post, put it here since there wasn’t any original Xbox forums here to post to lol :P

Centrix
You prolly are dealing with corrupt dashboard files.

Try booting it with a Mechassault, 007 Agent under Fire or Splintercell (try all three of them since their exploitable games)
Hopefully the Xbox will boot it and you’ll be able to load the exploit on the console (if it’s still there)

Otherwise, your only option is to modchip it and use Slayers to install a new dashboard/softmod ;]

  • #3

So whats the exploit? and if I can’t do the exploit for what ever reason, couldn’t I just buy a new HDD?

  • #4

If you can’t get a game to boot on the Xbox then I’m afraid the only option is to modchip it.
Then you’ll be able to plonk in any sized 3.5 inch IDE HDD ;]

Stock consoles need a per-console HDD key.
Which is unique to that console, so you unfortunately can’t just transplant them

  • #5

so how will I know if theres an exploit already on the system as you mentioned? and you also said that those three games were exploitable how so? whats the exploit? :)

  • #6

If the previous owner attempted to softmod it, then the exploited save game is already on the HDD.
It needs to be loaded from the HDD via the game.

There’s no way to tell which one there is on the HDD unless you have access to the HDD.
You could try and hotswap it, but this can kill your HDD.
And I think you’d need to have the Dashboard loaded as well..

  • #7

I got an error code 13 a while back (Posted a thread earlier this month) Dinohscene is that similar to a 16?

  • #8

Did some searching and found this.

Now I strongly urge you two to read it very carefully.
Hotswapping can easily kill your HDD.
Forcing you to get a modchip and start over with your saved games.

I still say go with the modchip but you can try the hotswap method.

Edit:
I saw your post chris.
If you really can’t get ahold of a PC with IDE connectors, then I’d ask someone to install a modchip.
Their not that expensive anymore and madridi4ever here on Temp sells old Xbox modchips as well c:

  • #9

Thanks for the find, to bad all the links are dead for the downloads but its ok, I’ll find the downloads to the msdash and the other files, seems straight forward to do :)

  • #10

You only need the MS dash files?
Or else, what files do you need.
I could help you to those files if you shoot me a lil pm ;]

  • #11

yes it looks like thats all I need oh and the Xplorer360 program, which I guess is used to fix and install softmods and the msdash?

  • #12

maybe a video on how to do the hotswaping lol but I can find that on youtube I bet :)

  • #13

Xplorer 360 is easy to get from the web aye.
Hotswapping, better be careful.

MS dash 5960 I got for you from me own xbox.
All retail, not a single file has been altered.
So you know you got a good one ;]

  • #14

kool how do I pm you here? sorry I generally just post and help out when I can lol :D

  • #15

k just downloaded the Xplorer 360 from Afterdawn, love that place :D

I have burned the Boot Cd with ImgBurn from xboxhd 1.9 using 5358 kernel I believe….if I switch the IDE connections now i get «Linux not found» guessing its not reading the Boot CD…..

  • #20

Humm, you’ll have to wait till the HDD is in an unlock state.
That happens when you play a song, or play a game iirc..

    1. Default Original Xbox Error Code 16

Some time ago i had made a thread about an Original Xbox i had and i asked if anyone knew if it was modded or not. I think it is. But is there any way i can get it up and running? The Xbox turns on and displays error code 16. The Xbox has no hard drive but i managed to get my hands on a few hard drives one is 500GB. I want to really use the Xbox but i have no idea how to fix it.

I took some new photos higher res photos of the chip. What is it? What can be done to use this Xbox again? Do i need some recovery disc?

      Xbox pic.jpg

      Xbox pic 2.jpg

      Hope i can use it.

16 — dashboard — Other files to do with dashboard / dashboard settings (specific dashboard error) —

Basically you need the MS Dashboard files on a drive that is correctly locked for that xbox (drive locking to eeprom may not be needed I guess as it has a Mod Chip of some type)

The guide at https://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?85589 is aimed at Softmod users but you can use the same tools to re-build an xbox HDD without locking ect but you will need a PC with an IDE port that is an old standard as most systems use Sata now

If you look through that guide although alot will not apply for your system you should still be able to build a Xbox HDD that will have a basic Operating system or Dashboard for the Xbox, I would still go for a custom dash though also like XBMC and run the games from HDD

Well thanks for the guide. I will check it out. But from what i’ve read on other sites. Woudn’t i just need a Slayer Auto Installer Disc to install a new hard drive on to the Xbox? The Xbox already has a modchip right? So i don’t need any eeprom. Right?

Can i make a bootable USB with xboxhdm1.9?

I tried making one and i tried booting with it and it did boot but at one part it says «Can’t find Linux CD image»

Can i use it on a USB? Or does it have to be burned on to a Disc?

I guess i won’t be able to use this Xbox. I burned a disc with that Slayer thing and the xbox is not reading it. Or so i think. All it does it displays Error 16.

Also i can’t do anything with that XboxHdm1.9 that i have on the USB. I don’t have any cds only had one that i already used up for that Slayer program. so i can’t burn xboxhdm.

      Come on. IS there Anything?

I don’t want to sound lazy but isn’ there something easier? Just put disk and format hard drive for use i mean it does have a mod chip after all right?

I don’t know to much about this i’ve never modded consoles that s why i need something easy. Something i can just launch games and play. I don’t care about anything else but just Burn Xbox games and play. That’s all.

If you’re getting error 16 it is the classic chicken/egg clock set problem: the console needs to check the time to boot but without a dash on the HDD, in this case nothing on the HDD, it can’t do that. But you can’t set the time without a dash………

With a chip the error should be irrelevant, I think. If that is working (fingers crossed) and a HDD is fitted you should, I believe, still be able to cold boot an installer disc. HeXEn or AID preferred to Slayers but remember to use the chipped options.

If either disc does boot then they should walk you through the process of formatting and setting up a new HDD and installing a dash.

Burn the disc to DVD-R with Imgburn to guarantee Xbox disc drive compatibility.

What I don’t know is whether this will work if the chips BIOS is missing or corrupted and if so how you fix that. I know there are BIOS which bypass the clock set check but apart from that I’m on thin ground as regards my knowledge of chipped machines in such circumstances.

I know of other methods you could try if you also have a working softmodded Xbox but there are risks so I won’t go there at this point.

I’ll ask on some other forums.

Yeah with a decent chip an error like that wouldn’t matter. Throw in any old IDE HDD, boot Slayers disc and format/setup the HDD. That is; the disc has the options to rebuild everything on an unformatted (or wrong format) bare drive.

I’m not up to date with current boot discs but that’s what I’ve always done with my chipped consoles. I’m not claiming Slayers is better that’s just what I’ve always done in the past and it never fails.

Never encountered any HDD I couldn’t use either, no matter what brand.

      Edit:
After reading through the OP’s posts I suspect either the DVD drive is failing or the chip is a cheap crappy one…if the latter is the case it’s rather pointless as it’s no better than softmod.

I can’t make out what chip it is though, is there anything printed on the board?
I haven’t looked at different chips for a long time now so looking at what I can see there doesn’t ring any bells.

Original Xbox Error 16 Fix – Here we can see “Xbox error 16”

It all comes down to this. Error 16 is caused by not being able to find the menu setting that will set the HDD’s clock. Many people experience this problem when they delete their HDD (original/upgraded), or MS dashboard files. • A modded Xbox is a great gift for a partner.
    • You can unlock your HDD using EEPROM management software from an Evo-x CD.
    • Place his HDD into your Xbox.
    • Get your chip on and boot together.
    • Once you have started in original mode, your Xbox will find a dashboard. You can also set the time from my dashboard clock settings.
    • Turn off Xbox and remove your HDD from friends
    • Place his HDD in his Xbox and lock it.
    • Install your HDD
    • (The clock has been set.) Now, boot up with the slayer CD.
    • You can install anything you wish to install normally

So my original XBOX has been tucked away for quite a while now. It’s softmodded (I think), and now whenever I power it on, I get a red-green flashing light around the eject disk button and the error code 16. I know this means a clock error, but I have no clue how to fix it. All the online instructions are far too complex. If possible I would like to keep the games that are already on the original hard drive, but if that is not possible, then I can always add them back later.

    Many thanks.

Sometimes you just need to «dig in» and try to work through it all.

Read as much as you can find about the error code (16) and watch any videos that you can find via you tube etc. (As painful as some of those videos are to watch….)

Reading and watching does not absolutely mean that you need to or even should apply any given «fix». But you may discover some diagnostic clue that relates to the red-green flashing light. Or other symptoms indicators that you have not really noticed per se.

As you proceed, you are very likely to start getting some sense of what is necessary to resolve the clock error.

Key is knowing as much as you can about your original XBOX, model, version, even serial number perhaps.

Work out a plan on paper: what needs to be done step-by-step, what to expect, what to look for.

May not be as complex as you currently believe. But even if complex, then there is nothing to be done for it as that is what will be necessary.

I have had an xbit mod chip in my xbox for over a year now with no problems. All of a sudden, I am gettting an Error 16 (your xbox requires servicing). After doing some searching, it seems that this error means there is something wrong with the dashboard setting the clock. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/lofiversio … 71946.html

I have tried to burn and boot from a DVD with evolutionx 3935 (includes M8 bios) with no luck.

Can anyone offer some help or if there is someone in ottawa that can fix it for me (and maybe install a larger hd while they are at it) I would be happy to pay to have it done.

    thanks!

Unfortunately this is error 16 not 13. :)

AFAIK, the system will try to load the MS dash to fix the time before it allows you to boot anything of the DVDROM.

More info is needed from the OP…

I am not sure what dashboard or bios I have on it unfortunately (i installed it over a year ago and have forgoten). With the mod chip off the xbox does the same thing as with it in. In both cases, the xbox seems to be starting up fine but I get the error 16 screen. Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Nope. You can’t boot unsigned code w/o the chip being on.
If you know somebody else with a working chipped/flashed Xbox (provided you can’t get this to boot), you may ask them to place your HD in there and rebuild it using Slayers on their machine.

I don’t believe the HD is locked. (how can I tell if it won’t boot?) The strange thing is I wasn’t messing around with anything when this happened. I was using it and everything was fine. I unplugged and moved it, and the next day it wouldnt boot.

There was a message I got a while back when it would load saying there was very little free space on one of the drives — C i think. But it always went ahead and worked fine.

Still working on getting slayer to a DVD.

    thanks

Are you normally able to boot with the chip off? If so, the HD is locked.

If it’s not locked, you can take the HD and slave it to your PC. Copy over the required files…mainly xboxdash.xbe (you did make a backup of the original HD file right!?!?).

The slayer DVD did not work for me — I end up getting the same error screen.

I never turned the mod chip off in the past so i do not know if it wold boot with it off. I do know that I never set the HD to be locked.

I have taken the HD out of the Xbox and put it in a case and hooked it up to my Mac and of course it comes up that the drive is an unrecognizable format.

Any other advice? Any Ottawa modders that can reformat the drive for me?

    Thanks

Do you have the original xbox files? I believe there are PC utilities (unfortunately you have a Mac) that let you format a HD to FatX. If you had a PC, format a spare HD to FatX, dump the original xbox files onto it, pop it into the xbox, boot, fix the time, swap back your other HD.

A modder would be able to fix your problem for you, but will cost you $$$.

I do have a backp of the original files but can’t find an app to format the drive as a FATX on a Mac. Any Ottawa modders out there?

    Much thanks everyone
