(Debian,Bunsenlabs,Debian netinst,Ubuntu mini).
Debian netinst,Ubuntu mini.
openbox xfonts-base xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-scalable xfonts-cyrillic xserver-common consolekit policykit-1
xinit xserver-xorg-video-fbdev xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-input-evdev xdg-user-dirs
build-essential dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r) virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-x11
xinit:giving up
xinit:unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit:server error
xauth:timeout in locking authority file /home/vik/Xauthority

Re: unable to connect to x server
celicoo123; Hello;
Let’s see what the system knows:
from the terminal post back the outputs — Between code tags — of terminal commands:
— As you are in a TTY if you have difficulties transferring the requested outputs and require some guidance in this regard we advise on a means to do so —Code:
lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA sudo lshw -C display
and what does X report :
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
code tag tutorial:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p…8#post12776168Be aware the command startx has limited applications today . Very possible depending on the DE the system will tell you to go pound sand when the startx command is invoked .
So what release is this and what is the DE we are working with ?Code:
lsb_release -a env | grep XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
and we come up with the proper command to start the GUI from terminal.

Re: unable to connect to x server
celicoo123; UnGood;
In that we have the system wanting to set up the nVidia card on one of the PCI busses:
9.951] (—) PCI: (0:0:2:0) 8086:191b:1558:6a01 rev 6, Mem @ 0x2ffe000000/16777216, 0x2fa0000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x0000f000/64
[ 9.951] (—) PCI:*(0:1:0:0) 10de:1c20:1558:6a01 rev 161, Mem @ 0xdb000000/16777216, 0x90000000/268435456, 0xa0000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x0000e000/128, BIOS @ 0x????????/524288
[ 9.951]But but, but nVidia can not identify the display device:
10.669] (—) NVIDIA(0): Valid display device(s) on GPU-0 at PCI:1:0:0
10.671] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to assign any connected display devices to X screen 0.
10.742] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
10.742] (EE) no screens found(EE)So we have hybrid graphics .. the 1st set is Intel and the 2nd being nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 .
Now the question is :
Why is no screen found ?show us now:
Code:
lspci -k|grep -iEA5 'vga|3d' dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
Because I want to see that the systems sees this additional Nvidia card and if drivers are installed.
And what monitor are you using and how is it connected ? We loosing contact because of an adapter ?
And is the control file in existence ?
what returns:Code:
cat /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
———————
DE is the (D)esktop (E)environment .. maybe unity (??) if it is (u)buntu that is installed .gotta be a reason why not

Re: unable to connect to x server
celicoo123; Ouch !
I sure do not like that xorg.conf file ! ..
However, I have not messed about with sytemd’s requirements in 16.04.
I would expect something like:Section «ServerLayout» ##should be as this
Identifier «layout» ##should be as this
Screen 0 «nvidia»
Inactive «intel»
EndSectionSection «Device»
Identifier «intel»
Driver «intel»
BusID «PCI:0@0:2:0»
Option «AccelMethod» «SNA»
EndSectionSection «Screen»
Identifier «intel»
Device «intel»
EndSectionSection «Device»
Identifier «nvidia»
Driver «nvidia»
BusID «PCI:8@0:0:0»
Option «ConstrainCursor» «off»
EndSectionSection «Screen»
Identifier «nvidia»
Device «nvidia»
Option «AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration» «on»
Option «IgnoreDisplayDevices» «CRT»
EndSectionwhere your BusID «PCIXXXXX» would be different.
Let’s see what results if we have the system build a new config file.
Code:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old sudo nvidia-xconfig
Now restart so that the Nvidia driver can take effect.
sometimes I wonder
other times I just do not know

Re: unable to connect to x server
I was able to generate the file, but i saw first:
Code:
Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc` No package 'xorg-server' found New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
And the new file:
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 370.28 (buildmeister@swio-display-x64-rhel04-17) Thu Sep 1 20:22:52 PDT 2016 Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout0" Screen 0 "Screen0" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" EndSection Section "Files" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "Unknown" HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0 VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSectionI reboot ubuntu and unfortunately still can’t access :/ .

Re: unable to connect to x server
celicoo123; Humm ..
still do not see Intel in that new config file .. as I expect it to be there and marked as «inactive» ..
Do you have the Intel chip set disabled in bios ?? By some chance ?and as to :
Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc`
No package ‘xorg-server’ foundI do not know what to make of that warning .. will have to expand my mind and see what I can learn .
Is this a development system ? As a quick look:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?se…enial&arch=any
indicates such .And in the meantime .. I look and consider dkms .
///
and:unfortunately still can’t access
make sure that «you» are authorized to access the desktop.
what returns:Code:
ls -al .ICEauthority .Xauthority
still, all we know to this time :
-
Re: unable to connect to x server
Hm let my check the BIOS. Meanwhile, this is the output from the last commands:
Code:
ls: cannot access '.ICEauthority': No such file or directory -rw------- 1 celicoo celicoo 0 Out 23 20:41 .Xauthority
About the development system.. it isn’t.. i download from https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop, 16.04.01 version.
