Recently I minimal installed my OS, but got an unexpected error while setting my monitor resolution. It seems like a very old problem, but this time there is something else (I think).
- To install the desktop environment:
apt-get update,apt-get install xorg-core xserver-xorg-core gnome-core gdm3 - To install graphics drivers:
apt-get install build-essential nvidia-kernel-common linux-headers-$(uname -r),./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-304.64.run
With the above steps everything seems to go fine.
-
To set resolution :
cvt 1440 900,xrandr --newmode xxx,xrandr --addmode VGA-0 xxxThen I got this error:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 153 (RANDR). Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode). Serial number of failed request: 29. Current serial number in output stream: 30
I don’t know what information you need, but here is some:
- graphics card model: nVidia GT 630.
- graphics card’s memory size: 512 M DDR5.
- monitor: Philips 190CW (1440×900, works well on Windows).
These are my settings in Windows (I haven’t installed the monitor driver and Windows just recognizes it as 190g6.)
xrandr output:

I tried to get edid:
sudo apt-get install read-edid

but got this error:

I tried to force the resolution to 1440×900 by using nvidia-settings, after reboot, resolution changed to 1440×1024 (nvidia-settings added a line to xorg.conf: Option "metamodes" "1440x1024 +0+0").
The screen become horizon-scrollable like that:
I also tried to extract edid.bin (by using nvidia-settings) and add Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-1:/etc/X11/edid.bin" at Section "Device" to xorg.conf. thanks to the awesome post «Fixing Ugly DVI/HDMI Displays due to EDID bugs on nVidia drivers», but unfortunately it doesn’t work either.

Xorg

- cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version для точной версии
Intel
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Gallium3D/llvmpipe ,
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) (RRQueryOutputProperty)
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) (RRAddOutputMode)

Option «ModeValidation» «AllowNonEdidModes»

Hi guys, could you tell me the desktop environment (e.g. Gnome, KDE. ) you use?
I’m having the same error using Gnome. Some Google suggested that, for some reason, it’s caused by an underscore in the mode name. Sure enough, running xrandr —newmode «1368x1024_virt» 115.50 1368 1448 1592 1816 1024 1027 1037 1063 -hsync +vsync (the same command VirtScreen runs) fails, while running xrandr —newmode «1368×1024-virt» 115.50 1368 1448 1592 1816 1024 1027 1037 1063 -hsync +vsync (same thing but with the _ replaced with -) worked fine.
Thank for your great job first, and I wonder is there any progress about this, I have the same mistake on ubuntu 18.04. @kbumsik
xrandr does not like the name for the mode, reran the exact command in terminal just replacing the name and it runs fine.
Any chance you could change the suffix VIRT_SCREEN_SUFFIX = «_virt» to VIRT_SCREEN_SUFFIX = «-virt» ? in xrandr.py
I also got the same problem on ubuntu 18.04
Ping! Same on Ubuntu 20.04, Gnome 3.36
Same issue on Ubuntu 20.04 no solution yet!
Any solution for this?

xrandr —addmode LVDS-1 1920x1080_60.00

X error failed request badname named color
If you capture X11 protocol messages using tools like x11trace, you will see it requests font by the following XFLD: ‘-*-*-medium-r-normal—0-120-*-*-p-0-iso8859-1’.
I don’t know why Steam uses old and outdated core X font subsystem, but this can be solved by installing X11 bitmap fonts, like font-adobe-100dpi in Gentoo (initial updating window will be really ugly).
«Breakpad exception handler» message
This is not an error message; it’s the first message Steam normally produces. The problem is that it silently shuts down immediately after.
Most often it happens because of the missing libraries. You can figure them out by running:
/Steam/ubuntu12_32 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ldd * | grep «not found»
Another case can be missing symbols: even if all needed libraries are successfully resolved by their names, some of them can be outdated for Steam and miss needed functions.
You can use LD_DEBUG linker environment variable to detect this:
you can get something like:
: /home/ /Steam/ubuntu12_32/steamui.so: error: symbol lookup error: undefined symbol: _XGetRequest (fatal)
With this information you can try to figure out, which of your system’s libraries contain these symbols. For the error above which happens on amd64 Gentoo it’s /usr/lib32/libX11.so.6 referenced from steamui.so, updating app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs to testing version 20121028 solves this issue.
Steam launcher can be given DEBUGGER environment variable, i. e. «DEBUGGER=strace steam» will run
/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam binary with strace.

Nvidea

«BadMatch» error with Xrandr
Hi,
So, I got some issues with Xrandr. I have a custom Wacom tablet, which is basically an Intuos 2 Large with a 15″ monitor on it. I have to set this monitor to 1400x1050_57.20, because at 60.00, I get interference (jitter). The problem is when I want to apply the custom resolution, Xrandr outputs this:
Code:
xrandr --addmode HDMI-0 1400x1050_57.20 X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode) Serial number of failed request: 31 Current serial number in output stream: 32
It only does this with the non-free nvidia driver. I don’t have this problem with the nouveau driver and the custom resolution is being set properly. However, the nouveau driver is slower with my GPU than the nvidia, which makes the overall system pretty laggy (especially with Krita)
Anyone have a clue on this? Why xrandr works with nouveau but not with nvidia?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: «BadMatch» error with Xrandr
Finally managed to set a custom resolution.
So, after looking around, I found that xrandr is not compatible anymore with the nvidia driver (should have read the darn manual). So you have to generate a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and screw with it (I did it with nvidia-settings in sudo mode).
After a lot of reboot and xorg that wouldn’t launch anymore I managed to write a xorg.cong that works for me.
Code:

Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request: 27
Current serial number in output stream: 28

На мысль натолкнули askubuntu.com/questions/235507/xconfig-xrandr-badmatch
2) копируем в /etc/X11/xorg.conf
HorizSync 30-82
VertRefresh 56-76

Nvidea
