Good day ,
1. Can you please find the installation log file?
The error «Your SQL SERVER installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with» is probably only part of the error and we are missing the most important part. For example it might be something like these known issues:
>> «Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (Error getting instance ID from name.). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem»
>> «Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unknown package id). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem»
In the first above sample the error was regarding the instance ID and it might be a result of using wrong format in the installation command.
2. I am guessing that you use command line or configuration file for the installation. The error might be a direct result of your configuration and not related to any corruption (this is the «has been tampered with» part in the massage
)In this case, Please provide the configuration file or the command file that you are using.

Question
I have installed SQLExpress. Whenever I boot my PC (XP Pro SP2) I get the following error just prior to logon: «Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (Error generating instance ID from name). Please uninstall the re-run setup to correct this problem.»
I have now uninstalled and re-installed twice with no success. SQLExpress seems to be running fine, just this worrying message all the time.
Any help will be gladly appreciated.

I found a suggestion for this issue on the web. Feel free to check it out and see if it applies in your situation.
You can try using the windows installer cleanup utility.
The problem with using it is that it will remove the program entry in your add/remove
programs in the control panel. You’d need to re-install the app to get it back in
that list. It’ll take care of that annoying installation problem though.
Thanks,
Samuel Lester (MSFT)
I’ve seen this before after changing the computername. You can re-run sql setup and choose Advanced / registry rebuild.
I have the same message on boot-up and can’t get past it -even safe mode won’t bootup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having exacly the same problem. I can’t get past boot-up, even in safe mode.
Thus if you did find any solution to this, I would be happy if you could share.
Can you tell me where I go to re-run sql setup? Thanks
I am facing weired issue of SQL Express 2005 over Windows XP SP2. I get XP OS crashed when I do following steps.
1 Install SQL Server Standard 2005 on XP SP2 with all the components.
2 Simply Uninstall SQL Server Standard 2005. This will leave some SQL Server related files and registry entries even after successful uninstallation.
3 Now, install SQL Server Express 2005 on the same machine. During installation of Database Services component, the installation fails and OS reboots with crash. I can get logged in to XP but it just goes on reboots with following exception.
«Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (Error generating instance ID from name). Please uninstall the re-run setup to correct this problem.»
I cannot even go to Control Panel to remove any programs. I tried using Registry cleaner, Win Installer Cleanup Utility after Step 2, but nothing worked for me. Please suggest the solution.

SQL SERVER – Event ID 26 – Your SQL Server Installation is Either Corrupt or has Been Tampered With (Error Getting Instance Name)
Feb 24, 2017 7:30:41 PM by Pinal Dave
While trying to start SQL Service for a named instance, I got an error message related to event id 26 – Your SQL Server Installation is Either Corrupt or has Been Tampered With (Error Getting Instance Name).
Here is the text of the error which is related to event id 26.
When I checked event log I found following error messages:
- Error Messages 1: The SQL Server (SOFTWARE) service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s).
- Error Message 2: Application popup: SQL Server: Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (Error getting instance name.). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
The error gives hints about the issue, but I was not very sure what I should do. I search on the internet and found that we get Error getting the instance name when mapping between instance ID and name is incorrect. So, I looked into registry key
As we can see above, the SOFTWARE is mapped to MSSQL13.SOFTWARE. so I looked for this key
Interestingly, I found that someone renamed MSSQL13.SOFTWARE to MSSQL13.SOFTWARE1 which was causing the issue.
As soon I renamed the key back, the issue was resolved.
Another way to find a cause of such errors would be to start SQLServr.exe via command prompt and you might get a more meaningful error.
I don’t know who renamed the key and that is still a mystery.

Whenever i make an MVC 5 controller with views, using entity framework and try to run and compile the file i get the «your sql server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unknown package id).» I’ve reinstalled Vs 2013, and have already reinstalled and uninstalled 2012/2014 versions of microsoft SQL local db.
If anyone has encountered and knows a fix to the issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to uninstall the SQL 2012/2014 version, reboot the server, and try to install the VS 2013 on a clean box? Have you checked the SQL Server installation log, and what’s detail in the logs?

1. This issue can be simply a result of change system name, or any configuration that result with conflict of data (connection information and not databases data). Changing the name back to what it was will correct it, in this case. Uninstall and re-install will work in this case, but this will not be my first solution. You can fix the current installation without uninstall it.
In this case you simply run SQL Server Setup from the original product CD. fixing the installation will reflect the new Windows computer name.
2. It can be result of trying to starting to the server instance without using the instance name. Probably not your case, since you are using MVC.
3. Please check the error log file, it might have more information like additinal error that point for specififc component. For example:
in a modal dialog with the title “SQL Writer”
This mean you probably can just re install the VSS writer.
Post here the whole error log information please and not just the GUI error massage 🙂

While working for my next blog I made some stupid changes and wanted to start SQL from command line. I have been using net start command to start SQL Services from command line but today I ran the executable directly. The advantage of this method is that information which goes to ERRORLOG is also shown on command line. I browsed to Binn folder and typed executable name sqlservr.exe and hit enter. I was welcomed with Error message as below.
E:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL12.SQL2014MSSQLBinn>sqlservr.exe
2014-12-16 05:14:43.93 Server Multiple instances of SQL server are installed on this computer. Renter the command, specifying the -s parameter with the name of the instance that you want to start.
Since my machine has multiple instances, the error message was quite clear so I added –s SQL2012 and hit enter. and this time, I got more dangerous error message

Well, error message as interesting information “Error getting instance ID from name” I went ahead and looked at instance name and it was SQL2014. Once I gave sqlservr.exe –sSQL2014 on command prompt, life was good and SQL Server got started.
If you get similar error, First make sure that instance name is correct. To know the instance name, refer my earlier blog What’s my SQL Server Name?
Hope this helps.

MS SQL Server is the most powerful, reliable and quick RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) which is used for storing data in the form of tables. But sometimes installation of this useful application is unsuccessful and results into following error message:
“Windows could not start the SQL Server ([myinstancename]) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 10022.”
Ways to Trace the Root Cause of the Error – 10022
When you receive the above error, you can find the cause of the error message.
- You can find the root cause easily with Configuration Manager. For this, start the SQL Server from the Windows Services applet.
- Another way of starting the SQL server is through command prompt. It may happen that after running the command, you get the following error message:
Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (Error getting instance ID from name.). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem
This error message is an indication that you are in big trouble, but anyhow it needs to be fixed if you want to work on SQL Server. As stated in the error message, reinstall the application but re-installing the SQL Server may or may not solve the problem. It might lead to your database corruption or damage. The MDF files may corrupt as the installation of SQL Server has been damaged. This is the condition when you need SQL repair software to repair corrupt SQL database.
- Another solution you can go for is the editing of registry entries. If you are technically thorough with the registry concepts, then locate the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server. There may be some permission problems, so correct it. If this does not work, then uninstall the SQL Server so that all the SQL entries can be successfully removed from the registry. Now install the application again. After installation, all the related problems of installation will get clear.
Solution to Resolve SQL Error- 10022
Databases corruption issues are not that easy to resolve but could be with an efficient SQL Database Recovery. Kernel for SQL Database Recovery software is equipped with advanced repair engine that instantly reacts and fixes corrupt SQL database MDF files.
Follow the simple process to repair and recover MDF file data easily:
Step 1: SELECT
Start the software and click the Browse button to select corrupt database file, select recovery mode and SQL database version as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 2: PREVIEW
You can view and analyze the recovered database objects from the corrupt SQL MDF file before saving the objects to the desired location.
Step 3: SAVE:
Select the saving mode and click OK to proceed. The database file will be saved successfully.
Final Words:
You can remove the error by uninstalling the existing SQL Server and install it again more cautiously. But if the error is due to the corruption in the MDF file then you will face same error after installing the SQL Server. You should repair the MDF file using Kernel for SQL Database software and retrieve the healthy files. The healthy database file will be more acceptable towards the new installation of SQL Server.
